Raw Onions

I’ve continued to try and learn more about raw food and how to make tasty stuff that’s raw.  A big help in preparing raw food is having a food dehydrator.  Mine finally came in the mail on Friday.  I was joking with Ryan that I had waited 17 years for it to arrive.  I vividly remember asking my Mom for a food dehydrator for Christmas when I was in 4th grade.  Ronco had sold me!  I didn’t get one that Christmas and sort of gave up in asking.  I guess I was meant to be a foodie even from a young age.   So, the machine arrived in the mail on Friday and I put it right to work.  I made onion bread exactly from the recipe on GoneRaw.com.  The prep was easy.  The only hard part is waiting 36 hours.  Too, the apartment stunk for the first 10 hours.  Just like smelly feet, which isn’t good in a small New York apartment.  But, yesterday the creation was completed and we sampled the fruits of my patience.  Hol-eeee-yyyy Cow!  So freakin’ good!  It’s great as crackers, bread, and particularly delicious mashed up and sprinkled on salad.  It reminds me of the crispy top to that traditional Thanksgiving green bean salad.  You know the fried onions?  But, it’s got this great buttery taste and crunchy texture.  This recipe is a winner, too, because of the flaxseeds.  Bring on the heart healthy fats!

Meanwhile, there probably won’t be many posts this week.  I’m on the fast I was preparing for.  Only 15 hours in, but the signs of detoxifying are already starting to show.  Also, as a note, if you’re reading this an considering fasting, do some research first.  Fasting is not for everyone and should be used as a method of detox, not weight loss.  It can be a healthy growth experience, but should only be done for the right reasons for the right person.   Be careful with your body, it’s the only one you get!
